On Saturday night, before the ADELE CONCERT (which was amazing), Kristena and I checked out What Happens When. The restaurant is best described by its Web site as: a temporary restaurant installation that transforms every 30 days for 9 months, offering guests an ever-changing culinary, visual and sound experience.
This month’s “Movement” was based off the birthplace of American jazz and is inspired by New Orleans flavors and techniques. And boy did they pull it off! With everything in the space inspired by the era - from the waitresses wearing 1920s style garb, to the jazz music playing, to the delicious cocktails - finally tried a gin fizz - yum!
And as far as the food goes - wow, it did not disappoint. We kicked off the meal with the fried boudine served with creole mustard and the spinach and artichoke dip served on toast with deviled eggs. Both were outstanding. For the main course, we shared the pecan crusted flounder served over grits with fava beans and maque choux and the soft shell crab served over coleslaw and dirty rice. Each dish was better than the next. The chef was also kind enough to send out some of their jambalaya in between courses — filled with Cornish hen, Cajun shrimp and andouille sausage, it had just the right amount of kick.
We finished off the meal with two desserts: a banana bread pudding and a bitter chocolate cake.
Great end to an amazing meal — I highly suggest checking out this movement, it’s almost over! And I’d love to go back again soon to see what they come up with next time around.
